Monterey Technologies submits patent for automation aware assistant

PARK CITY, UT, UNITED STATES, September 24, 2026: Monterey Technologies, Inc. is proud to announce our patent application for the White Paper on Automation Aware Assistant (A3) to Maximize Return on Investments in Artificial Intelligence Applications and Infrastructure. This document describes the design and development of the Automation Awareness Assistant (A3), including its Human-On-the-Loop (HOTL) decision-support architecture and reasoning capabilities. These features provide just-in-time assistance to human operators overseeing automated machine activities (e.g., vehicle driver, physician, weapons officer). A3 may offer a practical solution to realize strong return on investments in AI applications and infrastructure.

Monterey Technologies, Inc recently conducted a study project to design, develop, and demonstrate an improved interface between human vehicle operators and advanced automation. Applying User Centered Design (UCD) methodology, our team prototyped and demonstrated a locomotive cab user interface (UI) concept, “Automation Awareness Assistant” (A3). We designed A3 to improve human operator situation awareness of automated rail functionality. This includes providing decision support to the locomotive engineer and crew and alerting these human operator(s) of potential automation failures. A3 integrates and applies AI to recognize anomalies in both system performance and operational situations.
